I am Okello Chirstine I come from Gulu District I am a Ugandan, Acholi by tribe age 28 years a married woman with two children
I came to Kampala in July 1997 due to the war in northern Uganda. On reaching here I settled at Banda zone one,"Acholi Quater" from where I was doing stone query to earn some money.

Ever since this time, I have have been facing a lot of difficulties for instance some time my children are send away from school for school fees they could stay at home for two weeks or even more while am still looking for money yet some time stone could take so long without being bought. To make it worse, I had no any other source of money and yet i have to cater for the other family's demand like feeding, clothing and other nececities of life.

However, when I joined Life in Africa, I started to meet up the family demand like feeding, buying clothes and other necessities of life I am also able to pay for my children in the school and renting house, which is enough for the family all these are being done through the money that i am earning from Life in Africa.

Acholi Cultural Marriage:
In Acholi culture, when they are organizing for marriage, they first make both parties aware of the day i.e. the boy’s side and girl’s side. The people from boy’s family then organize themselves usually youths and select one person as the chairman “Won Kom" meaning chairman. Mean while from the girl’s side also organize themselves and select one person as chairman “Won Kom Me Paco” meaning chirman from girl’s place. Now people from boy’s place will go to the girl place when they reach there, they will be given the sit in the room where they are going to discuss from, while they are entering in the room they are not suppose to touch the door you enter with a lot of respect and when you entered you are not suppose to sit on the chair you sit on the mat.
After they have settled the chairman from boy’s place will begin introduction by introducing himself and the people he went with them, then the counter part also do the same. After the introduction, the chairman from boy’s place will call the girl and ask her if she knows those people if she accept, then it means she has agreed to get marriage.

The chairman from the girl’s place now begin to ask for LUK “This is the money for the appreciation of what the girl has been doing to the boy’s family or to the boy himself before she was marriage” the chairman will tell the amount and they begin to negotiate until they agree on one amount. In the negotiation both party’s members are free to tell out their view. After they will ask for the ONYON COTO PA MARO “This is the money given to the mother in law for her caring for the girl” then finally bribe wealth the chairman from the girls place is responsible for telling the amount then after the two parties will begin negotiating for the amount until they accept one amount. from there, they put every thing in writing and get sign by both parties. If the people from boy’s side finish all the debt, then the girl is given to them that mean she has been married.
